How to make a split-screen video

Open Effects → Layers, choose Split screen and a layout — two side by side, two stacked, three columns, four in a grid, or one big with one small. The first clips in the bin fill the boxes. Every box is a layer you can move, resize and grade; nothing is re-encoded until you export, and it is free.

  1. Import the clips. Press Media on the library bar, then + Import, and bring in every clip the split screen will use.
  2. Pick a layout. In Effects → Layers choose Split screen: Two · side by side, Two · stacked, Three · columns, Four · grid or One big, one small.
  3. The clips fill the boxes. The first two, three or four clips in the bin go into the boxes, in bin order, as layers at the playhead (it needs at least two clips). Each is cut by its own box-shaped mask, so the picture fills its slot and stops at its edge — live on the stage and the same in the export.
  4. Frame each picture. Click a box on the picture to pick its layer. Drag to move the picture inside the box, drag a corner to size it; the layer’s inspector has Pose, Mask, Grade and Sound.
  5. Set the timing. Each layer is a block on the track: drag it to change when it starts, trim its edges to change how long it stays.
  6. Export. Press Export. Up to 1080p is free; the split screen bakes exactly as it looks on the stage.

Borders, corners and sound

A layer’s inspector rounds its corners, adds a border and sets its opacity and blend. Layers are silent until you give them a level under Sound, so pick which box is heard — or mix two.

Several clips from the bin

A clip already on the track can join a split screen: right-click its block and choose Use as a layer (it leaves the sequence and sits over the clip under it). Put in the sequence on the layer’s menu brings it back.

Undo is Ctrl+Z, and one history covers the whole project.

Questions

Do the clips have to be the same length?

No. Each box is its own layer with its own start and length; trim or slide each one on the track.

Can I grade one box differently?

Yes. Each layer has its own Grade section (exposure, contrast, saturation, warmth) and its own blend and opacity.

Is it free?

Yes. Split screen, layers and exports up to 1080p are free, and your footage stays on your computer.
