How to add music to a video
Press Audio on the library bar, drop a track onto the timeline, then let Sound → Auto Edit fit it to the film and duck it under the voices. A mixer with loudness metering, EQ and a limiter keeps the whole thing even.
- Add the music. Press Audio on the library bar: your imported sounds and the built-in ones. Drag one onto the track, or press + Audio to import an MP3, WAV, AAC or FLAC — a video file’s sound is pulled out on the way in.
- Fit it to the film. Open Sound and pick the music’s strip in the Mixer: Fit music trims a long track to the end of the film with a fade, or loops a short one with equal-power crossfades into a new file.
- Duck it under speech. Sound → Auto Edit → Auto-duck reads the clip’s own sound and lowers the music while someone speaks, bringing it back between lines. The amount and the speed are sliders; the export carries it.
- Set the levels. In the Mixer each sound has a fader, mute and solo, and a meter. Normalise measures a strip in LUFS (the broadcast way) and sets it to −14 for online video, −16 for a podcast or −23 for broadcast — held back if the peaks would clip.
- Shape it. Click a sound cut and open Adjustments: fades in and out, a level over time lane you draw on, pan and tone lanes, EQ, compressor, reverb and echo. Sound presets (Podcast voice, Phone call, Old radio, Stadium PA) are one click.
- Cut to the beat, if you like. Sound → Auto Edit → Beats finds the tempo and marks every beat on the ruler (or across the whole project); Montage to the beat gives every clip one cut of two, four or eight beats, in order. Undo brings the old cuts back.
Making music and sound effects
Sound → Make sound writes a sound effect (from half a second to 22 seconds) or a music bed (5 seconds to 5 minutes) from a description — 22 credits for an effect, 15 a minute for music — and lands it in the Media drawer as an ordinary sound. A licensed music library is not part of the editor; your own files and the built-in sounds are free.
Keeping the voices clear
Sound → Voice has noise reduction, a noise gate, a de-esser and an isolation filter for the spoken parts; AI voice split (12 credits a minute) separates the voice from the background so each can be mixed on its own.
Every mixer setting bakes into the export, including the frame-accurate renderer, which rebuilds the whole chain offline.
Questions
Can I use any music?
Any file you have the rights to. The built-in sounds are free to use in your videos; a copyrighted song still needs its owner’s permission on the platforms you post to.
How loud should the music be under speech?
Auto-duck usually lands it 12–18 dB under the voice. Normalise the voice strip to −14 LUFS first, then let the duck set the music.
Does the music fade at the end?
Fit music adds a fade-out when it trims the track; a fade on any sound cut can be dragged longer in Adjustments.
Is this free?
Yes — mixing, ducking, fades, EQ and the beat cut are free. Only Make sound and AI voice split use credits.
